Job market

Guerrilla tactics: Here's an interesting article on using guerrilla tactics in a job search. I can see where some of their ideas work.

Moving on?

LEBRON IN NYC? Magic Johnson said he believes LeBron James will decide to leave Cleveland to play for the Knicks -- but urges Knicks team president Donnie Walsh to lure "The King" by first signing a marquee free agent such as Chris Bosh or Amare Stoudemire.

The Knicks obviously want LeBron James -- who wouldn't? -- but I wonder if he'd be better off in New York. He's done pretty well in Cleveland.

GLOBAL WARMING: LONDON – E-mails stolen from climate scientists show they stonewalled skeptics and discussed hiding data — but the messages don't support claims that the science of global warming was faked, according to an exhaustive review by The Associated Press.

Global warming is with us despite skepticism.

TIGER WOODS ON HIATUS: The golf great broke his silence yesterday to announce he was taking a hiatus from the sport he symbolizes to "repair" the incalculable damage he caused his family, fans and sponsors with numerous extramarital affairs.

It's amazing to think the Tiger Woods scandal has reached these proportions. There's no way of knowing how long he'll be out.

O-LINE: Fans of offensive-line play and the Miami Dolphins will enjoy this video. It's strange to see 300-pound grown men laugh like teenagers.

On the fast track...

NO HORSING AROUND: Here's an unusual job. A man, called a stooper, cashes in unused horse-track tickets. According to the story, he averages several hundred dollars a week.

OLD SCHOOL: Here's another story on former Oakland Raider DB George Atkinson and his old-school values.

Driving and talking

CAR PHONES: Here's a NY Times feature about cell phones being marketed as car phones.

HEISMAN WINNER: I'm not sure who will win the Heisman Trophy, although I think it ought to come from Colt McCoy (Texas), Toby Gerhart (Stanford), Mark Ingram (Alabama) and Ndamukong Suh (Nebraska). If I had a vote, it might be for Suh, a special defensive lineman. I like Gerhart as well. Both players are powerful and tenacious, and Gerhart is about all Stanford has.

Still, either of the four could be the country's best player.

Rule crazy

It's crazy: I found a story on the NY Times web site about proposed NFL rules that would prevent runners from lowering their heads and shoulders and plowing into tacklers. Wouldn't work. Football players do that instinctively. Besides, it would make more sense to prevent kamikaze hits by defensive players.

I'm curious how this will go.

Bobby's gone: Here's a column on the way Florida State handled the firing of Bobby Bowden. I watched Bowden's TV show when he was the coach at West Virginia in the '70s. To me, he's always been around.

Hold that Tiger: I found a NY Post story on about Tiger Woods' alleged infidelities. Personally, I'll give Eldrick the benefit of the doubt.

Desk work Dec. 5

I'm helping the guys at the local newspaper put out the sports section for Sunday.

I'm doing the men's college-basketball and top-25 college-football roundups today. My big football game (Texas-Nebraska) doesn't start until 8, but fortunately, my latest college-basketball game starts at 7.

I came in early, and there were already several NFL advance stories in rim. I did them, plus tennis, golf, East Carolina's football victory, N.C. State's basketball win and other stuff.

When I edited the small-college football roundup, I noticed we had Appalachian State losing to Montana. It was Stephen F. Austin, so I fixed it.

I wrote a soccer headline that said "Lees-McRae loses 1-0 in Division II soccer final." I could have put Fort Lewis, the winner, in the head, but no one in this area cares about Fort Lewis.

I jammed every game I could into the men's college-basketball roundup, but I had no room for East Carolina-Coker. Sorry.

We still have the Texas-Nebraska and Georgia Tech-Clemson football games to worry about. Both started late.

Texas and Georgia Tech won, and now we're waiting for stories. It'll be close.
